I am a DnB DJ currently living in Indianapolis, IN. I have been spinning the wheels of steel for close to 4 years now, though it seems like much longer. I've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a great number of exceptional artists like AK1200, Roy Davis Jr., Baby Anne, Arsenic, Phantom 45, Dave Owen and many others!
My radio show, "Introspection" is on every Wednesday evening (9pm ET / -4 GMT) now with SKYCAM. Tune in to hear my mix, or choose to get an aerial view of the equipment as I'm DJing via the video stream!
I am currently affiliated with
Mad Girl Promotions
From a recent interview with Mad Girl:
MGP: How did you get started playing music?
HP: I was actually raised in music. My father went back to school when I was young to get his degree in church music. From that moment on, I was usually working on some kind of musical project be it handbells, church choir or helping with the church's audio equipment. In school, I played the violin and trombone, but had to select one due to conflicting schedules. I eventually chose trombone and was very active in band all through out elementary, middle, and high school with Jazz, Marching, Orchestral, Concert, and Pep Band. I eventually picked up turntables the year after college and have been spinning music ever since.
MGP: What do you like best about it?
HP: This is a tough question to answer plainly. Music has been all around me my entire life and I honestly can't think of a time where music was not the biggest influence on my life. I suppose what I liked best was that even though I moved a lot when I was young, the music always stayed with me. I could count on my record/tape/CD collection. I could always join a new band or choir because the music is in me.
MGP: If you could change one thing about this industry, what would it be?
HP: I would try and get DJs to really start paying attention to what the audience wants. You can play the deepest cuts all night, but if the crowd can't relate to you or if you're trying to force a vibe instead of riding it WITH the audience, you're fighting an uphill battle. In this day & age, it's not about what we as DJs want to play, it's about what the people want. DJs need to be flexible and sometimes that means playing outside of your comfort zone.
MGP: Is there anyone that you would like to give a shout out too?
HP: First and foremost, my mentor DJ Kidman. After college, I moved to Chicago and I got the DJ itch BAD. Kidman would bring over his turntables and old house jams and we'd tag all night long. He's a great inspiration to me and really helped me get my DJ legs. We formed Introspective Productions in 2006 and I consider myself a lifelong member.
I also want to give a quick shout to the people who helped me get to where I am today. Cool Hand Lex offered up my first opportunity to really shine in Indianapolis by hosting my first 3 demos I ever made on CircleCityMixshow.com. From the B-rip mafia coming out to support my gigs to the house party attendees who can get down to my music, even if they couldn't tell you what Drum & Bass even is. These people fuel my fire and keep me going.
I can't forget to give massive shouts to the cats over at Boost.FM. They're a House/Techno station and I've been the only guy playing DnB/Dubstep there. I love doing my radio show, I think it's been close to a year, doing a show every week. It keeps me sharp and gives me an excuse to keep searching for more great music to play.
MGP: When is the next time that we can see you perform?
HP: My next live performance will be in Ft. Wayne on June 24th for Tronic Thursdays @ O'Sullivan's Pub hosted by Perpetual Entertainment. I'll be playing alongside the Indianapolis legend, DJ Shiva, and I couldn't be more stoked. I love the crowd up there and they always know how to have a good time.
MGP: Who/what are some of your major influences?
HP: I think the first few mixtapes/demos I heard were from DJ Roots. He's a Brazilian dnb dj/producer who makes some of the most soulful dnb I had ever heard at the time. I didn't get into the harder DnB until later. I also take a lot of inspiration from some of the House legends I learned about through Kidman. Artists like Cajmere, Paul Johnson, DJ Sneak, Daft Punk, Barbara Tucker, Bob Sinclair, Gene Farris, DJ Pierre, Angel Alanis. These people know how to make DJing fun, not just for themselves, but for the hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy dance music.
MGP: If promoters want to book you for a show, what's the best way to reach you?
HP: I'm a huge geek and spend a great deal of my time on a computer at home or at my job. Email is probably the most reliable, but I'm available on facebook, twitter and by phone as well. Or you can contact Alex at madgirlpromo@yahoo.com for booking info.
MGP: What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
HP: I would hope that I never tire of DJing and playing to crowds. It's a lot of fun, especially when I can get crazy and be creative. I eventually would like to start my own events in Indianapolis, but right now, I am very happy having the opportunity to make people dance!
